James Cole is one of the two goaltenders for the Ottawa West Golden Knights and a key part of the team’s success. His hockey journey began at a young age, starting as a defenseman before transitioning to goaltending. Over the years, he honed his skills with teams like the Ottawa West Wolverines, Golden Knights rep B, Sting AA, and Renfrew Wolves. His dedication paid off during his time with Perth, where he played a vital role in winning the prestigious Dwaine Barkley Memorial Trophy. Now in his second season with the Golden Knights, he continues to impress with his skill and leadership on the ice.

A “heads-up goalie” who blends the butterfly style with sharp positional awareness, Cole prides himself on reading the play and tracking threats to stay one step ahead. His preparation is both mental and physical, relying on confidence and a focus on what he can control, regardless of the game’s outcome. His military training through the Regular Officer Training Program at Carleton University complements his hockey career, teaching him discipline and how to handle pressure in high-stakes situations.

Balancing his academic studies, military training, and hockey career is no small feat, but he approaches each with determination and discipline. His experience extends beyond personal accolades; he values team success above all else, striving to help the Golden Knights secure wins and climb the league rankings. Reflecting on his time in hockey, he fondly recalls making the all-star team and contributing to Perth’s Barkley Trophy victory, which was a highlight of his career.

For Cole, being the last line of defense is a role he relishes. “If I play my game well, I can set up the forwards and defense to play theirs. Together, we can win more games and finish top of the league,” he says. His resilience, commitment, and passion make him a cornerstone of the Golden Knights and a player to watch this season.
