Ottawa, ON – The exhibition game was held on Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Barbara Ann Scott Arena, where the Ottawa West Golden Knights played against the Renfrew Timberwolves.
The game was a thrill for the players and spectators sitting in the stands. The Knights lost the game with the final score of 4-3. The game started with zero goals on both sides in the first period.
The first goal was scored by Knights defenceman Antonio Zito, during the ninth minute of the third period. The second goal was followed in quick succession after two minutes by centre Justin Murdoch, assisted by forward Connor Weido and defenceman Rhett Cleverdon. At this point in the game, the score was 1-2. The team was seen in high spirits and energized after those two successes.
The game continued and the Timberwolves scored one more goal making the score tied. It was fifteen minutes left in the game when forward Matthew Stringer sent the puck to the nets with assistance from Weido and Murdoch, making the crowd happy. But the Timberwolves scored, ending the third period and the game into a tie.
The game went to overtime, but no goals were scored during it, taking it to a shootout.
Ottawa West failed to score in the tenth round of the shootout, making Renfrew Timberwolves winners.
“When you have 50 shots and you only score three goals, that’s not a good sign,” said the head coach Steve Sundin after the game. Sundin added that moving forward the only thing is to practice and work hard.
Connor Dickey, a forward on the team said, “When you put 50 shots off, on any goalie, it’s a good thing. And hopefully, we get the balances next time to put it [shots] in [too].” “But there’s a lot of lessons that we learned today that we can take into the regular season. And we’ll build off it and we’ll be a better hockey team for it,” Dickey further said.
The Knights will play the season 2024-2025 home opener against Perth on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Barbara Ann Scott Arena.
