Owen Bird, defenceman for the Ottawa West Golden Knights, has been a dedicated and passionate player on the ice since the age of three. Raised in a hockey family, his father’s involvement in the sport played a significant role in getting Bird into the game. With a strong desire to help his son build connections and friendships, Bird’s father encouraged him to embrace sports from an early age.
A student at the University of Ottawa studying Human Kinetics, Bird manages the balancing act of academics and athletics with impressive efficiency. While juggling university life and hockey, Bird finds the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL) to be manageable, although some days come with their challenges. His time on the ice spans various leagues, including the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMAJ) and CHL, giving him a wealth of experience in the game.
Bird’s playing style is best described as defensive—his focus on solidifying his team’s back end while contributing to offensive plays with his first passes. Known for his strong presence on the ice, Bird is committed to finishing his checks and ensuring his team maintains control of the game. He is constantly working on his game, taking feedback from coaches, including his influential development coach Jeff Culhane, who introduced him to the world of triple-A hockey. Bird’s commitment to growth is evident as he continues to train in the summers, further elevating his skillset.
One of Bird’s proudest moments in hockey came when he played high school hockey alongside his younger brother, a special experience that deepened his love for the sport. Despite a challenging back injury last season that sidelined him for months, Bird remains resilient, showing a steadfast commitment to his physical and mental well-being.
While Bird’s ultimate goal this season is to help the Ottawa West Golden Knights win the championship, he does not have aspirations to play professionally after junior hockey. When not on the ice, Bird prioritizes his academics and enjoys working out at the gym when time allows.
With a love for the Toronto Maple Leafs and a focus on teamwork and personal growth, Bird continues to be a valuable asset to the Ottawa West Golden Knights, embodying the heart and dedication of a player committed to both the game and his team.
